Although we might sense how painstakingly Michael Twinn and Annie Kubler attended to the tiniest details of word and drawing, the result is a softly flowing ensemble, almost musical in its ability to lull the reader into the quiet, primitive world of early human history which it portrays. The man and the woman are introduced to us in 'cave drawings' given life by Annie Kubler's magic paintbrush. They 'step out' of the drawings to come together in the early pages. They meet. They share time together. They mate. The child is conceived and is delivered into the world. From the second of birth, it uses all of its senses - it hears the sound of its first cries, it touches its mother, it smells and tastes her and the milk from her breast. The man stays to nurture the child with the woman. The family grows. The text is questioning, searching, inviting children and parents to add their own questions and to come to their own conclusions.
