Though fully cross-referenced and indexed, the content of this volume seems unnaturally shaped by the A-to-Z format; thematic chapters would make more sense. For example, the reader is directed to six different entries connected with James Baldwin and his book Go Tell It on the Mountain . Nevertheless, it has its uses as a student reference. Following an introductory chapter, 300 entries discuss 53 literary works and their authors (most are Western) as well as characters from those works; 10 major world scriptures, myths, and legends; and some general themes and vocabulary. Full-page b&w portraits or photos of authors are included. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
