Roberto Marquez was born in Mexico, but has spent most of his career living and working in the United States, first in Arizona, then in New Jersey. His large classical canvases combine symbols taken from history, legend and the folk arts of Mexico with a strong autobiographical element. Taken together, his qualities have led critics to see him as the natural successor to the legendary Frida Kahlo. Increasingly regarded as perhaps the most important artist to have emerged from Mexico since the generation of Kahlo and Rivera, Marquez looks set to become a key name in American art for the 21st Century.
